CREATING A HEARTSAFE COMMUNITY:
Saving Lives Through Awareness, Training, and Action
February is American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart health, cardiac arrest survival, and the importance of CPR and AED training. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can happen to anyone, anywhere, and immediate intervention can mean the difference between life and death.
Join the Mission: Strengthening Northern Colorado’s HEARTSafe Community
Now in its 11th year, the HEARTSafe Community program, led by McKee Wellness Foundation in partnership with Thompson Valley EMS, Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, Loveland Police, and Berthoud Fire, is working to make
northern Colorado a safer place for cardiac emergencies.
The 2025 HEARTSafe Community goals include:
- Placing or replacing 50 AEDs in high-traffic areas.
- Training 1,000 individuals in CPR and AED use.
- Expanding First on the Scene (FOTS) training and incorporating hemorrhage
control kits.
A HEARTSafe Community is built through education, awareness, and accessibility, ensuring that more people are prepared to take action in an emergency.
Learn How to Save a Life – Take a CPR Class
CPR and AED training are essential skills anyone can learn. The HeartSaver CPR/AED with Infant Heart-Safe Community course provides hands-on training in:
- Performing chest compressions effectively.
- Using an AED to restore a normal heart rhythm.
- Managing airway obstructions in adults, children, and infants.
This American Heart Association-certified class is offered at a discounted rate of $10, thanks to generous support from the HEARTSafe Community initiative. Your contributions help make life-saving training accessible to more people in northern Colorado, strengthening the chain of survival in cardiac emergencies.
Special Incentive!
Anyone who signs up and completes a CPR class through TVEMS on either March 4 or April 1 will be entered to win a $100 gift card! Find a CPR Class Today!
Access to AEDs Saves Lives
Every second counts during a cardiac emergency. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can restore normal heart rhythms before emergency responders arrive, significantly improving survival rates.
McKee Wellness Foundation and HEARTSafe Community partners are working to increase AED accessibility in Loveland and surrounding areas. If an AED is available during an SCA event, survival rates can double or even triple.
Special Opportunity for Organizations!
Any business, church, or organization that does not currently have an AED and applies between February 14 and March 16 will be entered to win a FREE AED! Click here to complete an interest form to be entered to win.

Support HEARTSafe Community – Help Save Lives
HEARTSafe Community efforts depend on community engagement and financial support. Contributions to the program, through McKee Wellness Foundation, help fund:
- AED placements in high-traffic areas.
- Affordable CPR training for local residents.
- Expansion of first responder programs in northern Colorado.
A safe, prepared community starts with awareness, education, and access to life-saving tools. Help ensure Loveland remains a leader in cardiac emergency response.
Celebrating Loveland’s Commitment: CPR and AED Awareness Day
In honor of American Heart Month, the City of Loveland has officially declared February 14, 2025, as CPR and AED Awareness Day. This proclamation highlights the urgent need for CPR training, AED accessibility, and bystander intervention in cardiac emergencies.
Building a Stronger HEARTSafe Community – Together
In Loveland and the Thompson Valley EMS (TVEMS) district, we are making remarkable progress in cardiac arrest survival thanks to bystander CPR and AED accessibility.
- 90 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur per year.
- 46% receive CPR from a bystander—a rate above the national average, demonstrating our community’s strong commitment to helping others.
- 20% have an AED deployed before EMS arrives – a tremendous success, but one that we know can be even greater.
Because of these collective efforts, someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in our district is twice as likely to survive—and survive without neurological impact—compared to the national average. This means more families keep their loved ones, more individuals return to their daily lives, and more lives are saved.
But We Can’t Stop Here.
As our community continues to grow, so does the need for more trained responders, more accessible AEDs, and more resources to strengthen the chain of survival. By supporting HEARTSafe Community initiatives, you help provide CPR training, expand AED placements, and educate the community to ensure more people are ready to intervene in life-threatening situations.
Together, we can make northern Colorado one of the safest places in the country to experience a cardiac emergency.
Your support saves lives.
